Bach : Saint Mark Passion

Cultural ,  Concert ,  Opera at Versailles
  • There is truly a mystery of Bach's passions: the Saint Mark Passion! The score is lost but the libretto written by Picander, who also wrote the Saint Matthew and 50 of Bach's works, has survived.

The Saint Mark Passion was created in Leipzig on Holy Friday 1731 and played again in 1744. It is of average size with many more chorales than usual. The autograph score is lost but this Passion was composed by Bach with a lot of already existing music, notably the Traeurode and several numbers created for this Saint Mark Passion were reused later in other works.

This has led Jordi Savall to recreate this landmark score, to which he attaches particular importance, as it was composed by Bach at the height of his career, between the exceptional inspiration of the Saint John (1724) and the Saint Matthew (1727) and the coming beauty of the Mass in B minor begun in 1733.

Jordi Savall has decided to recreate this rare and iconic score, composed by Bach at the height of his career. Surrounded by excellent soloists and a choir of children, he reveals this still unknown work to the public with his boundless curiosity...
