For this devilishly Italian programme, Jean-Christophe Spinosi has chosen to associate two landmark baroque compositions and to confront Handel and Vivaldi’s creative genius. The dazzling Dixit Dominus, composed by Handel in 1707 when he was in Rome, is a musical tour de force, where each movement demonstrates the virtuosity and musical invention of the young Saxon composer (aged 22 at the time) conquering his Roman stars.Artfully combining German style choir structure with Italian melodic appeal, Handel deploys a succession of affects and their contrasts, making the Dixit a singular expression of his talent. The first masterpiece in his budding career, it captivates audiences today as then.
Vivaldi composed many masterpieces during his service at the Seminario Musicale dell’Ospedale della Pietà, a religious institution where orphaned young ladies received a purely musical education. Vivaldi had the best Venetian ensemble at his disposal and composed his famous Gloria for these young ladies. With its theatrical, shimmering and fascinating music, the Gloria is a landmark choral composition for a concert that will highlight baroque Italian splendour.
