  • In 1660, Charles II returned to the throne of England after years of exile fleeing the Commonwealth of England. As soon as he returned, he reestablished and reorganized his Chapel. The music played there, notably the Symphony Anthem, was remarkably similar to the motets sung in Louis XIV’s Chapel. This relationship is attributed to the King’s exile years, notably at the French Court.

It is clear however that other political and spiritual stakes are at play here. These two musical genres are to be taken as emblematic of the expression of the prince’s devotion. To analyze these relationships and their meaning, they will be studied during a Franco-British seminar organized by the CMBV in partnership with the Fondation Royaumont in 2017 and highlighted by a new production that will tour during the entire 2017-2018 season, with Les Pages et les Chantres du CMBV and the ensemble La Rêveuse (founded by Benjamin Perrot and Florence Bolton), conducted by Olivier Schneebeli.
