  • If the Concert Spirituel and Hervé Niquet count among the best interpreters of Purcell, it is because they have been working for more than 15 years on the revival, in concert versions or sometimes in original staged ones, of the stage music and the rarest masks of the famous composer of Dido and Aeneas – while remaining attentive to a constantly respectful interpretation to the note.

From King Arthur to Fairy Queen, performed at the Barbican Center, Salle Pleyel, the Philharmonie de Luxembourg and also in the most prestigious opera houses in France and abroad (Opéra national de Montpellier, Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Théâtre musical de Besançon, Tokyo City Opera…), these musical adventures, among others, contributed to the Concert Spirituel’s high reputation.

Hervé Niquet is turning this time to Purcell’s sacred and secular music and applying his expertise to Purcell’s most famous odes!

Hervé Niquet will begin this concert with one of the most famous Odes composed by Purcell on the occasion of Queen Mary’s birthday (Come, ye Sons of Art) and will go on with a solemn work, composed for the cortege formed for Queen Mary’s funeral.

With its virtuoso charm, its multitude of singers and musicians and its inventiveness, the Ode to St Cecilia is one of the composer’s most interesting and accomplished musical celebrations. Based on a text by Nicolas Brady in seven strophes, written for the celebration of St Cecilia, Purcell created a hymn to music and all instruments with considerable proportions comparable to an opera act.

This composition met with great success when it was created and is a reference today for the celebration of music and musicians!
