Infernal works by Rameau and Gluck.Rameau and Gluck’s mythological heroes are often confronted to the underworld, where love compels Orpheus to face Pluto’s redoubtable Ministers. In those infernal depths, both great composers have written exceptionally strong pages.
What if Rameau and Gluck carried us away into an immense and grandiose infernal scene? Their operas contain numerous terrifying arias and choirs, where the Fates, Vengeance, the Furies and Destiny clash and vehemently call from the depths of inferno.
Raphael Pichon has designed a program with the most emblematic pieces of this musical inferno from Rameau and Gluck’s operas, around the strong character of the baritone Stéphane Degout and the virtuoso Choeur Pygmalion.
Prepare for a baroque Requiem, a powerful and terrifying Mass for the Dead, where you will hear Gluck’s alarming Danse des Furies and Tristes Apprêts from Castor et Pollux, transcribed as a Requiem Aeternam for Rameau’s own funeral, in 1764.
Divinities of the Styx, inexorable King of Inferno, fear the valiance of the hero Stéphane Degout and his victorious cohorts!
