Presentation

Conference by Jean-Paul BLED.
Great specialist about Germany and Austria, professor at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne, he has published numerous books, including François-Joseph, Marie-Thérèse of Austria, Bismarck and Les hommes d'Hitler.
Wife of Archduke Franz Karl, second in the order of succession, Sophie of Habsburg occupied a central position at the court of Vienna upon her arrival in Austria in 1824. Her husband being unable to rule, she transferred her ambitions to her eldest son, the young Franz Joseph, who, thanks to his support, ascended the throne in 1848.
A key figure in the neo-absolutist decade - François-Joseph does not take major decisions without having discussed them with his mother - Sophie is closely associated with the restoration of monarchical power. However, in the 1860s, his political influence declined. She watches as a saddened spectator as Austria enters the constitutional era and the Austro-Hungarian compromise. On a personal level, this empress from the shadows comes into conflict with the official empress, Elizabeth, both
women each embodying an antinomic conception of their role.
Stunned by the tragic death of her youngest son Maximilian, shot in 1867, as Emperor of Mexico, undermined by grief, she died in 1872.
