Presentation

Versailles is synonymous with great decoration sculpted, gilded
and above all painted, of which Noël Coypel was one of the leading figures in the 17th century.
Therefore, there could not be a more appropriate place than the Château de Versailles to evoke these great ensembles, real highlights of the work of this artist, who is little known today, and whose career was nonetheless conducted under the gold of power.

Founder of a dynasty of painters, Noël Coypel (1628-1707) distinguished himself brilliantly in several fields: ceilings, paintings of horses, graphic arts and tapestry cartoons. After receiving training in Orléans, he returned to Paris and took part in the decorations of the opera Orfeo by Luigi Rossi. Spotted by the painter Charles Errard, then director of the royal decorations of the Louvre, the large decorations became the essential part of his activity: first of all the parliament of Rennes, then the royal residences or, in the twilight of his life, the Invalides. Some of these ensembles have now disappeared - in the Louvre, in Fontainebleau, in the Palais-Royal, and even those of the first Versailles - others are known only through a few paintings, which will be presented in the exhibition.

At the same time, Noël Coypel brilliantly passed through the stages of his academic career. He was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1663 and in 1664 was appointed professor, before becoming head of the Académie de France in Rome from 1673 to 1675, and then of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1695.

This first exhibition dedicated to Noël Coypel will honour the artist through a selection of 90 works (paintings, drawings, tapestry cartoons, etc.) presented in the Grand Trianon and in the Queen's Guard Room at the Château de Versailles, under a décor that he himself created and which was restored between 2015 and 2017. As an extension of this exhibition, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes will also organise an exhibition on the painter's entire career in 2024.
