Location : Salle du Jeu de Paume
  • Affiche exposition

On the occasion of the Year of the Comic Strip in 2020, supported by the Ministry of Culture, the Palace of Versailles invites lovers of the 9th art at the Angoulême Festival, and at Versailles, for a dedicated exhibition.
For the first time, the Palace of Versailles will devote an exhibition to the representation of Versailles in comics. Through a hundred or so works, visitors will discover a realistic, unusual or fantastic Versailles. A wide variety of original plates, sketches, preparatory drawings, but also original editions of albums and magazines, as well as photographs, will trace different approaches to historical places and events.

Comic strip authors and illustrators have also explored other perspectives, such as gardens, architecture, great historical figures or the events that marked Versailles. In particular, very rare representations of certain kings of France such as Louis XVIII and Charles X, episodes of the French Revolution or references to the Ancien Régime will be presented.

This exhibition offers lovers of the 9th art a wide range of graphic and technical styles spanning several key periods from the 19th century to 2019. From the evocation to the most faithful meticulousness, from watercolour to felt pen, from graphic novels to manga, via Franco-Belgian comic strips, many echoes and dialogues can be perceived between the plates.
