The Royal Opera
Presentation
Inaugurated in 1770 on the occasion of the marriage of the future Louis XVI to young Marie Antoinette, the Royal Opera quickly became one of the most beautiful venues in Europe.
The Baroque era was, above all, that of total art, where performances played a central role: dance, music, theater, costumes, and sets blended together in dazzling harmony. Despite this enthusiasm for the performing arts, the Court had no theater inside the Palace until the end of Louis XV’s reign: it was he who ordered the construction and decoration of the marvelous Royal Opera, designed as a multifunctional hall, intended to serve both as a theater and as a ballroom for the Court.
Reopened in 2009, the Royal Opera now offers each season a rich program of more than one hundred performances, including staged operas, concert operas, recitals, theater, and ballets. Renowned international conductors and performers take turns on its stage, with a special focus on the European Baroque repertoire.
The musical season restores to this prestigious venue the very purpose for which it was built: a vibrant space of theatrical and musical life.
