Presentation

Built in 1761-1762, this hotel was intended to house the Foreign Affairs and Navy departments. It was here that the Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Paris were negotiated, which put an end to the American War of Independence in 1783.
The architect J.-B. Berthier adopted the principle of flat brick vaults to protect the building from fire. On the other hand, because of the comings and goings of the diplomats who would not fail to frequent the place, a ceremonial gallery was designed and decorated to give a brilliant image of French diplomacy. The hotel is now occupied by the municipal library. Its sumptuous gallery, whose decoration remains intact, is now a library, and the building has lost none of its former charm.
