Montbauron Montreuil Area
Presentation
Just a stone’s throw from the Palace, across the iconic Avenue de Paris, lie two characterful neighbourhoods that invite you to discover another side of Versailles quieter, more authentic… and full of surprises.
Montbauron : a village feel in the heart of the city
With its almost bucolic atmosphere, this district feels like a small village. Its cobbled alleyways converge on the charming Place Charost, the epicenter of local life. Montbauron unfolds around its namesake hill, framed by major avenues such as Avenue de Paris, Avenue de Saint-Cloud and Avenue de l’Europe.
Here lies a unique trace of the past: the old water reservoirs built in 1686 to collect water from nearby ponds. Today, you can still see two of the one of which is still in operation, feeding the fountains of the Palace of Versailles !
Montreuil : history, art and discreet elegance
Once a village in its own right, Montreuil was annexed to Versailles in 1787. It has retained its traditional charm and distinctive layout, giving it a singular personality. At its centre stands the neoclassical Church of Saint-Symphorien, an uncommon style for its time.
This district was also favoured by members of the royal court, thanks to its proximity to the Palace. Here you’ll find the House of the Italian Musicians, brought by Louis XIV to enrich the music of the Royal Chapel.
Montreuil is also home to a place full of grace : the estate of Madame Élisabeth, sister of King Louis XVI. Its park is the perfect spot for a stroll, a moment of relaxation, and a chance to connect with the serene beauty of French-style gardens.
