Discover Roman polyphonic music of the 17th century.
The splendours of sacred music in Rome dazzled the whole of Europe.
The splendours of sacred music in Rome dazzled the whole of Europe.
The upheaval of authority and gender, so obvious here, is the main subject of this burlesque work brought to triumph by the Venetian Galuppi in 1762!
Agnès Jaoui takes on this astonishingly modern 18th-century fable with glee, giving us food for thought about the roles that society assigns to each gender.
Two castaways are stranded on an island ruled by women, where the men are docile, coquettish and even a little fearful.
Princess Cretidea reigns unchallenged over her subjects. She leads the armies, collects lovers and reassures her favourite, who fears he will one day be abandoned if his hairstyle displeases her. But the princess falls madly in love with Roberto, the one of the two castaways who refuses to submit to the laws of the island. A lively debate ensues, spurred on by Galuppi's flamboyant music: who should submit? Who should govern? Which is the weaker sex?
As regulars at the Opéra Royal, Vincent Dumestre and the Poème Harmonique return to Versailles with this satirical gem to accompany a cast of the highest calibre.
