After the success of Rhine Gold in May 2023 and Die Walküre in March 2024, here comes the third part - and the second day - of the Ring.
A Ring at Versailles, the dream of Ludwig II of Bavaria
After the success of The Rhine Gold in May 2023 and The Valkyrie in March 2024, here comes the third part - and the second day - of the Ring.
For any opera house, Richard Wagner's Ring - The Ring of the Nibelung - is one of the pinnacles of operatic art. Composed between 1853 and 1874, this totally mythical cycle is constructed like a ‘stage festival’ with a prologue: The Rhine Gold, and three days: The Valkyrie, Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods. This famous tetralogy was premiered in its entirety for the inauguration of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in 1876. Composed between 1856 and 1871, but premiered for the inauguration of Bayreuth in 1876, Siegfried is the opera of its eponymous hero, who kills the dragon Fafner and the dwarf Mime, then frees the Valkyrie Brünnhilde by crossing the wall of flames that protects her: kissing her to wake her up, he gives her the Ring in an oath of love... Wagner gives this powerful fresco extraordinary scope.
King Ludwig II of Bavaria's absolute passion for Versailles and for Wagner weaves a singular link between this Ring and the most beautiful palace in the world...
To celebrate the forthcoming 150th anniversary of the Ring (1876-2026), the Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles has asked the Saarbrücken National Theatre, which has staged each of the four Ring operas for the last two seasons, to come to Versailles to present them in concert version.
It is a tradition for every German opera house to regularly stage a production of the Ring. The singers of the permanent troupe, for whom it is a staple of the repertoire, are joined here by Wagnerian soloists who perform the major roles in all the German-language operas. It is a project rooted in one hundred and fifty years of practice that the Saarbrücken Opera will be presenting at Versailles for four years.
