‘In some places it will be like a serious song, in others like a joyful dance...’. With these words, in 1890, Dvorák described the work he was working on to a friend. In fact, the Slavic term ‘Dumka’ refers to the epic ballad, and more specifically to the lament of captive characters. By extension, Dvorák uses it in several of his works to describe a dark, introspective piece of music interspersed with light, happy movements. In this unusually structured trio, he frees himself from the rigours of sonata form and lets six ‘Dumky’ express themselves individually, each with a very distinct character and a striking alternation between melancholy and exuberant dancing.
‘Take one look at Schubert's Trio Op. 99, and all the misery of existence vanishes as if by magic; the world appears again adorned in all its radiant freshness,’ wrote Schumann on discovering the Trio in B flat major Op. 99, which, like the Trio Op. 100, are among the last and most abundant works composed with indestructible enthusiasm and great vitality by a seriously ill Schubert, who was 30 years old in 1827. This trio is full of shadows, alternating violence, anxiety and fragility. An infinite variation of a theme on itself in an ever-changing light, as if trying to penetrate ever deeper into the heart of a mystery.
