The Théâtre Montansier – An 18th-century jewel in the heart of Versailles
Just steps from the Palace of Versailles, in the very heart of the Notre-Dame district, come and discover the Théâtre Montansier, a sumptuous Italian-style theater inaugurated on November 18, 1777, in the presence of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
Built by Jean-François Heurtier, this theater was the work of Marguerite Brunet, known as La Montansier, an emblematic figure of the theatrical world and one of the first female entrepreneurs of her time. Bold and visionary, she managed numerous venues, but made the one on Rue des Réservoirs her masterpiece, obtaining the royal privilege of following the Court on its travels.
A place steeped in history, with its original charm intact
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Théâtre Montansier has preserved its soul through successive restorations, offering you a true journey back in time.
Since being acquired by the city in 1834, it has been directed by great names such as Marcelle Tassencourt, Francis Perrin, Jean-Daniel Laval, and today, the duo Geneviève Dichamp and Frédéric Franck.
Their ambition? To combine artistic excellence with accessibility, blending public and private theater, contemporary creations and timeless classics.
Encounters with artistic teams, opportunities for dialogue, and an eclectic program make the Théâtre Montansier a vibrant, welcoming venue deeply rooted in Versailles’ cultural life.
