La Prière aux Étoiles is one of the few texts by Marcel Pagnol that has never been performed. Only part of the film has been found in cinemas, and to date there has been no stage or theatrical adaptation.
In Paris, Florence, a young actress struggling to make a name for herself, is increasingly unhappy in her relationship with Dominique, a wealthy heir from Lyon. Born in Montmartre into a poor family and now maintained by Dominique, who wants to marry her, she hates her existence. What Florence wants is to find true love. Every evening, she says her ‘prayer to the stars’ so that the one she sincerely loves will finally come along.
For his part, Pierre is disillusioned. A successful music composer who dreamt of writing great operas and unforgettable symphonies, he now wants nothing more than to escape the mundane, the easy love and the false glory, and to leave Paris.
One evening, fate brings these two lonely souls together. Driven by their love at first sight, they decide to flee Paris for the South of France. It was in a small hotel in the port of Cassis that they lived out their romance for three months, under the watchful eyes of the bar's regulars. Florence has not revealed everything about her past to Pierre, and reality will eventually catch up with them. Will the future be able to stand up to the past?
Bringing La Prière aux Étoiles to the theatre means presenting an unpublished text to the public. A forgotten script brought to life for the first time. La Prière aux Étoiles is one of the rare texts by Marcel Pagnol that has never before been performed. Only part of the film has ever been made into a movie, and to date there has been no stage or theatrical adaptation.
