Maison Berthe Morisot, a new museum space in Bougival.
Berthe Morisot lived in Bougival, as her daughter Julie tells us in her diary "the happiest moments of her life".
She lived with her husband Eugène Manet and daughter Julie at 4 rue de la Princesse (today 1 1 avenue de la Drionne) in this house, which was rented out every summer between 1881 and 1884. In 1882, she stayed there for most of the year. The house had a magnificent flower garden. She painted the Fable (1883), Eugène Manet and his daughter in the garden (1883), in the Veranda (1884), Jardin à Bougival (1884), Roses trémières...
This house of happiness will open on Sunday 1 December as a space dedicated to the artist, an Impressionist painter as well as a mother, wife and friend.
The only place dedicated to this major female figure of Impressionism, it pays tribute to her work, which has been exhibited all over the world.
More generally, the museography highlights the role of women in Impressionism through an interactive tour.
It also gives an idea of the upheaval that the movement represented, a pictorial revolution that paved the way for the artistic avant-gardes of the early 20th century.
Temporary exhibition
The museum will also host temporary exhibitions.
The inaugural exhibition, ‘Enfance en plein air, le chemin de Glasgow à Bougival’, highlights two themes dear to Berthe Morisot: childhood and nature.
It demonstrates the influence exerted by the French Impressionist movement on European artists, particularly those from Scotland.
