Outdoor Historical Treasure Hunt: The Affair of the Poisons
Presentation
Explore the gardens of the Palace of Versailles or the Historic Quarter through a 2-hour treasure hunt on the greatest scandal of the 17th century: The Affair of the Poisons.
Outdoor treasure hunt in the gardens of the palace or in the city of Versailles on the Affair of the Poisons.
1673: We are in the midst of the Affair of the Poisons, one of the greatest criminal cases in French history. Louis XIV is stunned to learn that a significant part of the Versailles court is involved. He himself will be the target of a poisoning attempt.
Gabriel Nicolas de la Reynie, the first Lieutenant General of Police, who notably introduced public lighting, is in charge of the investigation.
Despite his determination, the mastermind behind the affair was never unmasked!
However, eight suspects, among the most prominent names of the kingdom, have been identified: Françoise-Athénaïs de Mortemart de Rochechouart de Montespan, Philippe d’Orléans, Madame de Sévigné, the Man in the Iron Mask, the Prince of Condé, Olympe Mancini, Antonin de Lauzun, and La Grande Mademoiselle.
Three centuries later, it is up to you to finally uncover the truth!
Investigation details:
Duration: 2 hours
Meeting point: Under the statue of Louis XIV, Place d'Armes, in front of the Palace of Versailles.
Investigation location: In the historic district or in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.
Welcome: Your investigator-guide will greet you, distribute sealed instruction envelopes, introduce the plot, and provide final warnings.
Your mission: Your team will set off independently, exploring the palace groves or the Saint-Louis district with boldness and skill to solve riddles and unmask the culprit.
End of investigation: In the Cour des Senteurs, just a stone’s throw from the palace, the winning teams will be announced, followed by additional historical insights on Versailles and the Affair of the Poisons.
(The garden route was designed based on “Manière de montrer les jardins de Versailles,” a travel guide written by Louis XIV himself.)
