Pedestrian passages
Presentation
Discover the pedestrian passages of the royal city: pleasant shortcuts used by the people of Versailles and often overlooked by visitors.
Most of them are clustered around Place du Marché Notre-Dame. Rue des Deux-Portes connects the market to Rue Carnot and provides access to two shopping courtyards. Passage Saladin also links the market with Avenue de Saint-Cloud, while on the other side, Passage Saint-Pierre connects that same avenue with Rue Clemenceau.
Passage de la Geôle, meanwhile, leads to Rue Baillet-Reviron and a network of courtyards and alleyways lined with antique shops.
Not far away is Passage du Plessis, home to several artists’ and craftsmen’s workshops. It can be reached via the cul-de-sac Rue du Plessis, which opens onto Rue du Maréchal Foch.
Across Place d’Armes, Passage des Récollets guides you from Rue de la Chancellerie, very close to the Palace, to Rue Bailly and the charming Vieux-Versailles district, filled with artisan shops.
In the Saint-Louis district, the passage of the same name opens to the left of the cathedral and connects the Carrés Saint-Louis, renowned for their lovely restaurants and boutiques.
And don’t miss the picturesque Montée du Janicule, which climbs from Avenue de Saint-Cloud up to the top of Montbauron Hill, crowned with houses featuring beautiful belvederes… Now all that’s left is for you to go out and discover them!
