Villa Viardot – Masterclass and Lecture on Piano Rolls with Laura Granero

The Villa Viardot invites you to a special day dedicated to the history of piano performance and interpretation with pianist Laura Granero, a specialist in Romantic performance practices and historically informed interpretation.

The five young pianists taking part in the masterclass will continue their work with Laura Granero through several sessions focusing on the Romantic repertoire. The programme also includes a lecture on piano rolls and the early recordings of Clara Schumann’s pupils. These historical sources provide valuable insight into performance practices of the period, including rubato, arpeggiation and tempo choices.

This event is part of a weekend exploring the artistic connections between Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann. The research of Laura Granero and the work of Françoise Thinat bring different performance traditions into dialogue around the 1898 Érard piano once owned by Pauline Viardot.

The day concludes with a concert by the participating pianists, giving the audience the opportunity to hear the results of their work. An exceptional way to discover Romantic music through the history of its performance practices and research into early sound recordings.
