Discover the world of Robert Schumann’s piano music through an exceptional masterclass led by Françoise Thinat.
Five young pianists, all at Bachelor’s or Master’s degree level, will perform works by Robert Schumann before Françoise Thinat, pianist and teacher, heir to the tradition of the great French piano schools of Marguerite Long and Alfred Cortot, and founder of the Orléans International Piano Competition.
This event forms part of a weekend dedicated to the connections between Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann. Friends and artists with exceptional careers, Pauline Viardot and Clara Schumann helped to promote and champion Robert Schumann’s innovative work. This shared passion for Schumann now brings together Françoise Thinat and Laura Granero around the 1898 Érard piano that once belonged to Pauline Viardot.
The masterclass offers the chance to rediscover a tradition of interpretation passed down orally through several generations of pianists and teachers, from Lucette Descaves to Marguerite Long and Yvonne Lefébure, right up to Françoise Thinat. It is further enriched by Laura Granero’s artistic research based on historical sources, notably piano rolls and early recordings made by Clara Schumann’s pupils.
A unique opportunity to discover different approaches to the piano interpretation of Robert Schumann and to delve into the history of musical practices of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
